Windows Phone Speech Install Help

We really wanted to bring you this sooner, but there was really no good text-to-speech solution for Windows Phone. That is until now! With Windows Phone 8 comes some great sounding speech synthesizers which will do wonders to help you practice your foreign languages.

The good news: they are FREE!

The bad news: Microsoft didn’t make it possible for CueBrain to install them for you, so you need to download and install them manually.

Here is a step by step visual guide to help you through the process.

When you are done installing the voices, CueBrain will speak cues as it is quizzing you. You can also tap on the Cue and Answer buttons in the Quiz and View to listen to them.

Our leaderboards are currently filled with green and Amazon-orange androids. Show your love for Windows Phone by beating Android users at your favorite language! Let’s fill those leaderboards up with the Windows Phone flag!

In the meantime we will be working hard on adding speech and custom cue card editing, which paying customers will of course get for free once they are released.

Don’t forget to pin the app to your Start screen and let the CueBrain live tile cycle through the cue cards you had trouble with in your quizzes.

Importing From Excel

There is no direct import feature from Excel into CueBrain, it but can be done with some quick copy and paste. Actually, the built-in cue card sets are all done with the help of Excel.

Create a dummy cue card set in CueBrain
Save it to SD card
Open this file in a text editor on your PC/Mac (such as Notepad, or Notepad2).
You will notice the format is pretty straightforward: cue=answer pairs on each line
Copy and paste your cells from Excel into this file
Replace all tab characters with the = character. You can copy and paste one of the tabs into the Replace field in the Replace dialog box.
To enable the correct speech, put the following lines at the top of the file:

esanswerLanguage>

enanswerLanguage>

…depending on whether cues or answers are Spanish.

See here for a list of all the language codes you can use.

If you also need a country code, like English Canadian, you can append it like so: “en_CA”. See
here for country codes. Use the two-letter version.

CueBrain Widgets Help You Learn Passively

Android has this neat concept called widgets. You can add parts of your favorite apps to the desktop and they will show you periodically updating content.

CueBrain (6.03.006) now supports this too! Every time you make a mistake during a quiz, the cue card is recorded on your phone. If you add a CueBrain widget to the desktop, it will cycle through the cue cards you had trouble with. How cool is that?

To do this in older versions of Android:

Press the Home key to go to your desktop
Tap and hold an empty spot on your desktop
Tap Add Widgets
Add the CueBrain widget

To do this in newer version of Android:

Press the Home key to go to your desktop
Tap the applications button in the bottom center of the screen
Tap the Widgets tab on the top left of the screen
Swipe right to left until you find CueBrain
Tap and hold the CueBrain widget and drop it where you want it on your desktop
If you tap and hold the widget again and let it go in the same place, it will become resizable. You can now drag its edges to change its size. Sorry this only works on Android 3.1 and later.

As much as it is cool that Android lets you use 3rd party apps for text-to-speech, they sure don’t make it easy. This is mostly “for your protection”, as these text-to-speech apps have access to any text that you give them to read.

Svox has some great voices that work very well with CueBrain. Yes, the default text-to-speech that ships with Android is very basic and doesn’t sound good.

Please don’t ding CueBrain for this in the Android reviews as we have no control over or desire to write text-to-speech engines — this is another lifetime of work.

Here is a step by step visual guide to setting this up on your Android phone.
